Oh Lord, Let Me Be Silent So That I May See and Hear The Wisdom In Others

"When words become unclear, I shall focus with photographs. When images become inadequate, I shall be content with silence."
Ansel Adams.
A few more words of wisdom from Ansel Adams...

"In wisdom gathered over time I have found that every experience is a form of exploration."

"There are worlds of experience beyond the world of the aggressive man, beyond history, and beyond science. The moods and qualities of nature and the revelations of great art are equally difficult to define; we can grasp them only in the depths of our perceptive spirit."

"A good photograph is knowing where to stand."

"A great photograph is one that fully expresses what one feels, in the deepest sense, about what is being photographed."

"...always a sunrise, a glitter of green and golden wonder in a vast edifice of stone and space."

"A true photograph need not be explained, nor can it be contained in words."

"To photograph truthfully and effectively is to see beneath the surfaces and record the qualities of nature and humanity which live or are latent in all things."

"There are always two people in every picture: the photographer and the viewer."

"A photograph is usually looked at - seldom looked into."

"I tried to keep both arts alive, but the camera won. I found that while the camera does not express the soul, perhaps a photograph can!"

"Landscape photography is the supreme test of the photographer - and often the supreme disappointment."

"The only things in my life that compatibly exists with this grand universe are the creative works of the human spirit."

  1. As a whole, it looks like this autumn trip for you and Bobbie is turning out to be one of the best: great weather, great company, great hikes and for me: great photos. Thanks for taking me along even though I am here in Texas. I appreciate it!

  6. Thanks for all your wonderful postcards from Zion. It was such a different experience to enjoy fall weather if just for a couple days. The Narrows was incredible!

  12. Zion is such a magical place, we sure delighted in our hikes with you and the gang. Little sad that I'm back home in Indiana and not out hiking in the warmth of Zion.
Suzanne looks comfortable standing next to the edge and what's with the Buck on the trail. Great pictures!

    1. I live on that "edge." It adds meaning and depth to life to stare death in the face. :))

  14. Well as my old friend kB might say. This reminds me of the quote from the famous greek philospher Anonymous.

If you saw a man drowning and you could either save him or photograph the event...what kind of film would you use? - Anonymous

  15. So many words that say so well what I am thinking as I look at your photos and read the comments. What I have to say in addition to all this, is that somehow I thought all the good weather left Zion in October. I am thinking, as I follow all of you around on your hikes, that I can get there in November and still manage to keep from being drowned in some biblical deluge, which happened to me that last time I hit canyon country in late October. I guess it is a crap shoot.

    1. We've been spending November's here for over 10 years…they are great for the most part, just have to weather a cold front or two and it warms right back up. 50 some degrees is ideal for hiking, anyway, if the suns out.
