With Apologies To Lennon and McCartney

Never overlook an opportunity to overlook Lovely Ouray...

The Weehawken Trailhead couldn't be more than a couple/three miles from our front door. I only hike Weehawken in the fall nowadays, ever since I got bit by a mosquito on that trail a few years back. You can't go wrong in early October, though. No bugs and fiery aspen and oak brush leaves.

Pal Leon joined us on this beautiful leaf-peeping overlook hike. It was a perfect day—clear to partly cloudy—an un-forecasted "gift" sandwiched between storms.

Giddy from all the color, a lyrical "mash-up" of "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" played in my head: Tangerine trees against marshmallow skies...

LSD

Picture yourself on a trail in the mountains
With tangerine trees against marshmallow skies.
Somebody calls you, you answer quite slowly,
A girl with kaleidoscope eyes
Cellophane candles of yellow and orange
Towering over your head.
Look for the girl with the sun in her eyes
And she's gone.

Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Lucy in the sky with diamonds

Lucy in the sky with diamonds, ah, ah

Follow her down to a bridge in the mountains
With rocking horse people and marshmallow skies
Everyone smiles as she drifts through the aspen
That grow so incredibly high

Newspaper stories appear at your door
Wanting to take you away
So you climb with the girl till your head's in the clouds
And you're gone

Picture yourself in a plane on vacation
With plasticine stewards with looking glass ties,
Suddenly she's there right beside you,

The girl with kaleidoscope eyes.

  1. Fall is in the air eh? Beautiful photos as usual of Colorado. Do you do much editing to your photos to add color or is the sky that blue and the leaves that bright and colorful???

    1. When there are no forest fires the sky is really that blue. As for the trees...as long as the sun is out...they are generally brilliant. With the ongoing drought we didn't have high expectations this year. But it turned out to be one of the lovelier falls ever. Of course my favorite is when patches of aspen turn orange and red. :)
I do get into the HTML to increase Bloggers default resolution from 640 to 1600. I think I shared that procedure with you a while back. It makes a huge difference, especially on landscape photos.

    2. I have been doing the 640 to 1600 since you first mentioned it. Makes a difference. I moved to Breckenridge in 1990 on the 1st of October. It was snowing the day I moved in and didn't stop until the following May. I just missed the weather you have taken photos of. Beautiful colors.

    3. "Breck" is pretty high up...October frequently bids goodbye to fall, especially in the "old days."

  2. It seems like your trees have a lot more orange in them this year in all the pictures I've seen or is that typical? It's starting out to be one of our more colorful falls here also. That is if it ever quits raining!!!!

    1. It does seem that way. But I think I'm drawn to shoot more photographs of the orange and red. Whatever the reason, I love the season and it is so brief.

  3. You certainly lucked out with a beautiful day. We haven't seen that much blue sky for several days. The aspen are so brilliant. Great day to be on the trail!

    1. We've had rain and snow since that day. The mountains are white right down to just above town and they are skiing in Silverton's ski area. I'm still in shorts, tho. :)

  4. Hi Mark. I’ve been reading your blog for some time now, but never written. Also, as I type , I’m staying at Caleb and Kelley’s campground. Quite a coincidence that when I was here last spring, Caleb mentioned Ouray, I mentioned I read the blog of someone from Ouray, and he said “Is his name Mark? That’s my dad.” We all loved the moment. And I really love the Beatles and your version of Lucy in the Sky. Happy trails! Deanna

    1. What coincidence! Thanks for sharing that...and coming out of the "lurker closet." :)
Give my son a big hug for me. I miss him and Kelli so...

  5. Surely in your travels, over in Utah you may have driven thru Logan Canyon between Bear Lake and Logan. We chose that route leaving Jackson Hole and heading south on the I-15. OMG! Without diminishing the San Juans in fall, which is, and forever WILL BE our favorite, Logan Canyon was on fire in colors of gold, red, yellow, lavender , orange and more. Truly amazing and spectacular. Nevertheless, your photos are beautiful and evidence of a very special day. Lucy in the Sky indeed.

    1. Yep...have traversed that road in every season. One of the best drives in fall, tho. As for "diminishing the San Juans in fall," I've been known to have an occasional "affair" with other places. Beauty is beauty, and, well, lust you know...hard to look the other direction :).

  6. This time we know every word written here could not be described any better Mark and Wee Hawking almost made it in our journal as our first every high country hike back some 18 yrs ago, unfortunately the lungs and legs gave out way too soon. So it's always great to see this area when you post your visit there every year.
We hope this overcast spell clears up and gives us two more days of enjoying our visit this year.
Again it was great being with you and Bobbie.
    Safe travels to you both.
