"Into The Wild"

In the wake of a series of slipstream winter storms that pummeled high mountain passes—as well as our vertiginous bobsled-run driveway—the sun returned just in time to righten my snow-globe world and brighten my mood ring.

Here's the thing about winter: It's too damn long around here and it's dark all the time.

And here's the thing about staying married: It takes near continuous compromises in order to maintain a happy medium, which is just a hearts-n-rainbow way of saying no one gets what they really want, which, for me, is to just worship the sun and stay warm in it's ever loving light.

If our mountain-dweller winter could be shortened from 7 months to say...2, then I could donate all my long pants to the thrift store, sell the Rv and snowplow, and live happily ever after...well tanned and wrinkled.  At least it seems as though I could. "Greener grass?" Perhaps...because right now the lawn is buried under 2 feet of white plague.

But in the spirit of fairness and (sigh) complete honesty, winter excursions on days like yesterday are nothing short of a soul-quenching, this-is-why-we-live-here banner of love and devotion to mountain living.

So I guess we'll keep the Rv for now—skedaddle off to Arid-zona come January 15th (and not a day later) like we always do—to boondock in deserts where the weather better suits my wardrobe. Variety is my favorite spice, after all, and while two-month winters are no doubt well on their way to Lovely Ouray, they're still a good fifty years off in the future and past our "expiration dates."

But yesterday...man-oh-man. Heaven on earth. What a solar powered, supercharged experience to play in the snow and not be cold!

Peace out from Lovely Ouray...where "compromise" is cheaper than divorce lawyers. :)

  5. I have to agree with you about winter. Trouble is the days are short here on the desert too! At least we’ll be at winter solstice soon and this long dark tunnel will begin to reverse. Love those sun and snow filled photos anyway. Chris

    1. My Seasonal Affective Disorder acts up about this time every year. I sometimes wonder if all the holiday goodies and excess alcohol might have anything to do with it? Naw.
