On Routine...

Every road, after a few miles, forks into two, and each of those into two again, and at each fork, you must make a decision.  C. S. Lewis

If it's so, as Ray Bradbury said, that half the fun of adventure travel is the "esthetic of lostness," then we are having a ball.

And to successfully practice the art of adventure we must break the chain of routine, which, according to Wilferd Peterson, renews our life...be it through "reading new books, traveling to new places, making new friends, taking up new hobbies, or adopting new viewpoints." In doing these things it is not the mountain we conquer, but ourselves. Sir "Edmond" knew a little something about that.

Yes, adventure can occasionally be hazardous, but never as deadly as routine.

"A journey is a person in itself; no two are alike. And all plans, safeguards, policing, and coercion are fruitless. We find after years of struggle that we do not take a trip; a trip takes us." John Steinbeck

I'd rather put on a helmet than a tie
I'd rather be airborne than to a desk be tied
I"d rather pedal up a mountain than drive
I'd rather be outside when I die.  mej.

And then, as my son Caleb likes to say, "there is the Payoff!"
If you want to put a dent in "routine," make sure some of your "roads less taken" are not on the map...
Peace Out,
Mark and Bobbie...and Chris :)

  1. Great post! reminds of me of the innocence of kids in the neighborhood out for a romp around the neighborhood and working up an appetite for dinner! Oh joyful day!

  2. I used to joke that when I got my first bicycle, my father's very stern instruction before leaving the family for good was "stay on the sidewalk". Since we lived on a block that resembled a high school track, it didn't take long for me to start looking for a "fork in the road". Once I realized that dad wasn't coming back, I chose to leave the sidewalk and it was then that I never looked back and my life of endless new adventures and "decisions" began, and are still happening as recently as yesterday with our purchase of Arizona property. Another decision, and most certainly, a new adventure.

    1. One of your least favorite spots...Quartzsite. What can we say? It's kinda grown on us it has extrafter 3 years, and it's a happening place. :) It will be our winter home. Beyond that, there's a method to our madness. Goes into escrow tomorrow, god willing and the creek (dry wash) don't rise.:) BTW...it has extra full hook-ups. :) Jus sayin.

  4. Love the Bukowski quote. And to say ROUTINE is DEADLY is a serious understatement. I'm about to expire here from it. What I wouldn’t give to have me some adventure. Thanks for having adventures for me and sending back such sharp crisp pictures. Wish I were there.

  5. Nice looking trail!
We got a break from our desert biking routine and rode along the coast to Morro Strand today. Nice to see the ocean for a change.

    1. That is perhaps the greatest argument for owning an Rv...to change your front yard view, climate and mood.

  6. Missed ya, figured you were taking time away from the laptop to meditate on the how fortunate you both are to have found this life that meets all your desires without consuming the Earth :) Looks like another purrdee day with sun & clouds and temps just right..
We've been busy touring a couple of Ourayites around Wine Country. Otherwise the dr visits keep us pretty close to home, but will head out on the 26th for some revisiting parts not seen in many years south of us down the coast.
    Stay thirsty my friends.
